The anniversary of the motu proprio Traditionis custodes brings the question back : does being attached to the Tridentine or Extraordinary Rite mean that one refuses Vatican II ? does one thereby place oneself outside the communion of the Church ? Some think so, especially following statements by Pope Francis. And so they approve of the ongoing attempt to eliminate this rite, in the double name of unity and of the Council. But such an analysis, without any basis in history or in faith, would in fact be ruinous for Catholicism - a religion of the permanence of faith through its development, and not of a legislative-type flow where each step supersedes and cancels the previous one.
